Jaisalmer Fort

The Jaisalmer Fort features among the oldest forts in the entire Rajasthan state and some term it the second oldest as well. The fort stands at a soaring height of 250 m and boasts of 99 bastions and four gigantic gates. With its five storeyed structures, the Jaisalmer easily reminds one and all about the typical Rajasthani style. For being built of yellow sandstone, the fort is also labelled as ‘Sonar kila’.
The fort gets security from three burly walls and its most of the bastions were built during 17th century. Screen windows, subtle pavilions and good-looking balconies mark the fort and offer it a truly unique look. Four entrances lead travellers to the fort and those are Aksya Pole, Ganesha Pole, Suraj Pole and Hawa Pole. Out of the four available entrance gates, the first one has been rated as the most significant one for various historical reasons.
The fort delights travellers at every point of time and dazzles the most during the night, as the splendour of the fort turns out to be more prominent with getting its shadows to every nook and corner of the fort. Inside the fort, you can be led through slender lanes to many shops, houses, palaces and temples. Inside the fort, travellers get to see wells that still serve the water needs of those living inside, and Jain temples of Rishabhdevji, Sambhavanathji and Ashthapadi.
Inside the Jaisalmer fort, you will look at five palaces, like Sarvottam Vilas, Akhai Vilas, Gaj Mahal, Rang Mahal and Moti Mahal. Grand havelis are also there within the fort premises that remind one of the opulently carved interiors and exteriors. These days, the majority of the mansions have been changed to make shops.
