Hawa Mahal

The pink city of Jaipur in the Indian princely state of Rajasthan is dotted with palaces turned hotels, and easily features on every tourist's tour itinerary. The Hawa Mahal is a signature building of Jaipur, which is a multi-layered palace.

Sawai Pratap Singh, grand son of Sawai Jai Singh and son of Sawai Madhoo Singh constructed the Hawa Mahal in 1799 AD with the help of the architect Mr. Lal Chand Usta. It exhibits an impressive architecture and comprises five storey building that truly represents the magnificence of Rajputs’ artistry.

The Hawa Mahal is an integral piece of the Jaipur City Palace complex and defines Jaipur in a unique way. This milestone five-story and pyramid-shaped structure extremely relishes its tier after tier of 953 small casements. Each of the existing casements contains minute lattice worked (Jali) pink windows, tiny balconies and arched roofs by way of suspending cornices, elegantly replicated and engraved. The circulation of cool air (Hawa) happens through these small windows even in hot months.

The Hawa Mahal is truly a structure of red and pink sand stone, warily and delicately outlined by means of white borders and motifs. The Mahal with an impressive sight of Jaipur city was initially imagined to enable women of the imperial family to gaze at the everyday life and stately processions in the city without being seen by others.
