The Mughal Emperor, Akbar built the town with the aim to make this city as his capital, but scarcity of water led him to leave the plan in lurch. The city was then being abandoned and the capital of Mughals was shifted to Lahore within next 20 years.

The city was built during 1571 and 1585 and remained people-less for quite some times. At present, Fatehpur Sikri has a sizeable population and relishing scores of the old structures with of the efforts of the Archaeological department.

Fatehpur Sikri exhibits the Mughal architectural splendour at its best and prides in some of the first-rate architectural structures. The Mosque in the city is almost a copy of the mosque in Mecca with the designs taken from the Persian & Hindu architecture.

The Diwan-I-Am or the Hall Of Public Audience is a site that got used for celebrations and public prayers in the olden times. The Turkish Sultana’s house served as a pavilion for relaxation, while the Treasury got used for playing the game. The Palace of Jodha Bai is the biggest and the most significant building in the royal palace which got its name after Akbar’s Rajput wife, Jodha Bai.

Some other sites in Fatehpur Sikri that fascinate travellers from all over are the Hawa Mahal and Nagina Masjid, the Birbal’s Palace, the Sunehra Makan, the Panch Mahal etc.
